A US high school has cancelled classes and a group of teenage girls have been arrested after they made threats to classmates inspired by television series Pretty Little Liars.

The girls were students at Piqua High School, about 137 kilometres west of Columbus in Ohio.

Ohio police say the girls, aged 14 and 15 have been charged in Juvenile Court. One of them reportedly created a Snapchat account using the letter "A" and posted threats about exposing classmates' secrets, prompting false rumours about a school shooting.

Another in the group reportedly wrote on a bathroom mirror "I'm still going to shoot up the school. A."

In the television series, 'A' is a character who makes anonymous threats against the main cast. Their identity was revealed on the series finale, earlier this year.
