Jimmy Kimmel has made an emotional return to television for the second time in 2017, after taking a week off while his son had heart surgery.

Kimmel's son, Billy was born in April, with a heart condition that required surgery three days after birth, and then a second operation at the beginning to December.

For his first episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live! following Billy's surgery Kimmel opened with Billy in his arms showing the audience that the baby was doing well, before performing a passionate monologue in support of the Children's Health Insurance Programme (CHIP).

Kimmel said CHIP, which ensured insurance for children who would otherwise not be covered, was in danger, after lawmakers did not approve funding for it.

He stressed that the programme had previously had support on both sides of the house, but has been caught up in achieving tax cuts in the new budget.

"I don't know what could be more disgusting than putting a tax cut that mostly goes to rich people ahead of the lives of children," he said.

"Why hasn't CHIP been funded already? If these were potato chips they were taking away from us, we would be marching on Washington with pitchforks and spears right now."
