Thor: Ragnarok becomes biggest film at 2017 NZ box office

Taika Waititi's Thor: Ragnarok is now the biggest movie at the New Zealand box office for 2017.

The Marvel film has pulled in NZ$6.5 million nationally since its October release, which contributes to a global haul currently sitting at NZ$1.19 billion.

Disney, the company that owns and distributes Ragnarok, attributes the success to its Kiwi-flavoured comedy.

"The humour has been key to setting this film apart and creating its own unique place in the Marvel Cinematic Universe," says Jo Bladen, a regional boss for Disney.

"A large part of that success was the unmistakably Kiwi character Korg, who almost steals the show."

New Zealand is the only country in which Ragnarok is the highest-grossing film of the year, says Disney.

Internationally it's currently the seventh-most successful MCU film, behind the two Avengers films, the two Guardians of the Galaxy films, Iron man 3 and Captain America: Civil War.

Although Ragnarok is currently the biggest film of the year in New Zealand, the year is not over and Star Wars: The Last Jedi is likely to compete with it after it is released next week.
