Newshub has unveiled plans to launch a new daily video series on its digital platforms from next month.

Newshub Explains promises to give "context, background and explanation" to daily news, issues and major events.

Viewers can access the series via the Newshub app, website and social platforms from July 18.

It will be made by the team behind Newshub's midday bulletin, which will end on July 1. While the shift to Newshub Explains will result in some work being reallocated, no jobs will be lost.

Mike McRoberts and Samantha Hayes will host Newshub Explains, with other journalists guest hosting based on their area of expertise.

Newshub head of digital Jono Hutchison says the show is another demonstration of the organisation's commitment to high-quality news content.

"Created with our audience in mind, the segments will provide in-depth analysis and insight on a range of topics that New Zealanders want to know about.

"Designed for and broadcast on the Newshub app, digital and social platforms, these individual feature videos will fit the interests of our audience and allow us to segment our coverage in a way digital users love."

"It gives people the ability to choose which stories they watch and when, and allows us to make the most of our world-class studio and production capabilities."

Acting chief news officer Richard Sutherland says Newshub is "committed to providing audiences with the content they want, where it is most relevant to them".

"In this case we are developing and further investing in our digital news content, connecting our award-winning reporters with audiences in a new way, reinforcing our 24/7 news service, and providing a new way for Kiwis to find information on the platforms they're utilising most often."
