Work and Income staff investigated after racial slur

Several Work and Income staff are under investigation after a drunken night out ended with a racist slur against a bouncer.

The group launched a verbal attack, using the N-word, after being refused entry to a pub in Taupo.

Door staff are used to staggering customers and drunken slurs, but after a prolonged verbal attack on Friday night, the bouncer at Finn MacCuhal's turned on the camera.

"She was right in my co-worker's face," says doorman Tamehana Tai-Rakena.

The group is based at the Taupo Work and Income office but weren't there today.

Mr Tai-Rakena has received plenty of support after posting the video on his Facebook page, including from his co-workers and his boss.

"People need to have self-responsibility," says Finn MacCuhal's manager Tom Condon.

Work and Income sent several representatives to the bar today as part of their investigation and according to employment law, it's well within its rights to take action.

In a statement, Work and Income says it will not tolerate poor behaviour or racist language, and two staff members have been stood down while the investigation continues.
