A Wellington home has been engulfed in fire this afternoon, the smoke and flames from which prompted a bigger response than initially sent to fight the blaze.
The home, in the suburb of Melrose, was reported to have smoke coming from it around 1:55pm today, a Fire Service spokesman says.
Two fire engines and a ladder truck were sent to the scene, but while en route the response was upgraded to second alarm, meaning two more fire trucks and a support vehicle was sent to help.
Firefighters are still dampening hotspots and a search of the property found no one inside.
An investigation into the cause is underway.
