Mountain biking crash leaves man dead

A man has died in a serious mountain biking crash on the Ben Lomond Track in Queenstown.

Emergency services were called just before 4pm by another party on the track, who found the man in need of serious medical attention.

It is understood he crashed around 45 minutes' walk from the summit.

Police and St John paramedics were transported to the track in a helicopter.

It was almost two hours before emergency services were able to locate the man.

CPR was performed but the man was pronounced dead at the scene.
