Man seriously hurt in grain silo incident

A man in his 60s has suffered serious injuries after he was trapped in a Southland grain silo.

He was rescued by firefighters from a farm near Riversdale just before 10am this morning and flown by rescue helicopter to Dunedin Hospital.

Two St John ambulances were also on the scene and assessed eight people overcome by fumes after trying to rescue the man from the silo.

Four of these people were taken to Gore Hospital in minor to moderate condition. The four others were assessed at the scene and cleared of any injury.

It is not yet known how the man ended up in the silo, up to his waist in grain.
