State housing tenants protest against redevelopment

State housing tenants are taking to the streets this morning to protest against the transfer of nearly 3000 Auckland properties.

The rally is centred in Glen Innes outside the Tamaki Redevelopment Company, which will acquire the houses at the end of the month.

Vanessa Cole from the Tamaki Housing Group says it's a step towards privatisation.

"The company are building a mixture of social, affordable and private housing, which is driving up house prices in the community and pushing people out."

Ms Cole says low income tenants are the people hit hardest in Auckland's housing crisis.

"The Government are providing all the solutions to the housing crisis for the middle class, and not for those who are actually suffering the most from the housing crisis, which is low income tenants."
