A Taupo man has found a home after calling a RadioLIVE talkback show and sharing his story.

In early July, John, who didn't want his surname used, shared his story about living in a tent in Taupo during winter.

Rotorua man Andy Valk heard John's story of hardship, and knew he had to do something.

"I sort of thought if I was in his situation I wouldn't like to be out there in the freezing cold," Mr Valk says.

"And I thought, no, we've got a big house, plenty of room. I decided that we had to get there and pick him up."

Mr Valk travelled to Taupo, helped John and his beloved dog pack up, and took them in.

John had lost his job, and turned to alcohol when he got depressed. Now he says he's determined to get himself sorted.

"It's helped me out to restore a lot of faith in humanity," he says.

Mr Valk says he's been great comfort and company, and a great help around the house.

John doesn't just help Mr Valk, who's blind. He also cuts firewood, which the pair delivers to families in need through winter.

A job and a permanent home are next on John's list. Until then, Mr Valk is happy to have him.
