The remaining two Lotto Powerball winners have claimed their $13.3 million prizes.

The winning tickets were sold at the Oparau Roadhouse in eastern Waikato and to a Hamilton family via the MyLotto website.

The family, who wish to remain anonymous, say they joked with their friends on Saturday afternoon about winning the lotto that night.

"We tried to check our ticket before going to bed but the website was overloaded. We'd watched the news that night about the likelihood of winning and I said 'well, we've got more chance of getting struck by lightning twice than of winning Powerball anyway," said the winner.

"Then we thought if we go to bed without checking our ticket, at least we've got one more night of imagining that it might be us that won," laughed the winner's husband.

It wasn't until they logged in to their MyLotto account on Sunday morning that they realised they won.

"A screen flashed up saying 'Congratulations, you have won $13.3 million'. But we just couldn't believe it! We were thinking maybe it was a promotion or something."

"So we phoned up my sister and she said 'you better have a good reason for waking me up this early', which I think we did!

"She came around and we logged into her account and she didn't have any winning message, which is when it all started to click into place  yes, we really have just won a life-changing amount of money."

The winner said the family had eggs and champagne for breakfast to celebrate before getting back into a normal Sunday of mowing the laws and tidying the house.

"The overwhelming feeling is disbelief. I kept saying I don't think I'll believe it until I see it in our bank," said the winner.

"There are just so many figures in our bank account now. I keep logging online to look at it  we keep pinching ourselves."

"Things that you never thought would be possible, we can now actually do. I keep waking up in the night and just giggling to myself thinking about it."

"This win will set us up for life and there is plenty to share around as well."

In total there were three first division winners, who each took home $13,368,688. Another 51 people won $19,499 in Saturday's draw.

A Dunedin couple were first to claim their prize, showing up at Lotto's office in Auckland on Monday morning with their ticket.

"I pulled it out of my pocket to look at about 100 times [on Sunday]," the winner said.

"I kept it in my undies draw until we had to bring it up to Auckland to collect our prize. No one would ever go looking in there."

Lotto NZ chief executive Wayne Pickup said the $40 million draw was the most popular in Lotto's history, with more than 2.7 million tickets sold.

"At our busiest time yesterday, between 5 and 6pm, we were selling over 3,000 tickets a minute. And it's not just in-store. MyLotto was consistently dealing with 10 times its normal traffic and accounted for around 15 percent of total ticket sales."

He says while only a select few won a slice of the prize, everyone rushed online to see if they hit the jackpot.

"There have been reports of our website crashing after the draw, and with close to 100,000 people trying to check the results at the same time it's not surprising some people couldn't get through."
