A well-known Wellington police dog who was the model for a popular soft toy has died.
Link "went to sleep forever" with his current and former handlers by his side.
The German shepherd was also a television star, featuring on Dog Squad and was the muse for a line of toys.
Police say Link was suffering health issues made worse by old injuries which "led those involved in Link's care to make today's difficult decision".
The patrol dog, who was nearly eight years old, was bred at the Police Dog Training Centre and worked in both Wellington and Wairarapa.
But while Link is no longer around, his legacy will live on in his soft toy likeness.
