A Canadian man has been busted at Auckland International Airport for importing methamphetamine inside a footstool.

Customs searched a package from the US which had been declared as an ornate footstool, only to find 18 bags of meth inside the structure.

It totalled at around 8kg, or a street value of $8 million.

The 26-year-old Canadian had been living in Auckland and was caught trying to leave the country.

Customs' Maurice O'Brien says the bust was an "excellent result for everyone involved".

"Collectively they have stopped a large quantity of meth from harming New Zealanders and identified a person allegedly responsible."

The man will appear in court charged with importing a class A drug.
