A massive tree has fallen onto parked cars at Auckland's Cornwall Park, smashing windscreens and crushing vehicles.

One person is confirmed to have been injured, and has been treated for shock. Police have been searching the vehicles for others who might be inside, but it's not believed anyone else is hurt.

Four cars were crushed, with a fifth having damage to its windscreen.

There was nothing obviously wrong with the 130-year-old cottonwood tree, park director Michael Ayrton told Newshub.

"We undertake a survey of all the mature trees in the park on an annual basis. I have no reason to suspect there was anything wrong with it."

He says it's fortuitous no one else was hurt.

"There's obviously some material damage to the vehicles, but my main concern is for their welfare."

It's not clear yet what caused the tree to topple. Mr Ayrton said the tree, located near One Tree Hill, is "sheltered" from most of the wind.

The fire service received the call at 2:20pm.
