Climber dies after fall in Canterbury

A climber has died after falling a "considerable distance" during a day tramping trip at Mount Harper west of Ashburton.

Emergency services were alerted to the incident on Thursday afternoon after a locator beacon was activated by the climber's partner. 

A rescue helicopter was sent to the scene and saw a body however were not able to recover the body due to the conditions. 

The partner was taken to safety and is safe and well.
