Refugee families have their first Kiwi Christmas

Christmas is a special time for most families, but even more so for those celebrating it in New Zealand for the first time.

That's the case for hundreds of new Kiwis brought here as part of the Government's refugee resettlement scheme.

Newshub met one family who are more than ready to embrace the holiday cheer.

The year finished on a high note for the Parte family. Just five months ago they were living in Malaysia hoping to be accepted into New Zealand.

"We were very happy because this is the country we dream of," says Frank Parte.

The family, originally from Myanmar, are also Chin people. The minority ethnic group have faced persecution for decades, so it's no wonder the Partes want to forget the past.

"We used to be afraid of policeman, but here they are our friends," says Mr Parte.

From Myanmar to Miramar, the Partes now live a simple life in suburban Wellington.

It's their first Kiwi Christmas and the first with a tree. The three daughters have even joined a local nativity play.

"When I see my kids playing Christmas activities, it really amuses me," says Mr Parte. "I feel so happy."

New Zealand welcomes 750 refugees every year, plus a separate quota from Syria, with another 250 to be added in two years.

The Red Cross says it's this time of year where these people need most support.

"There are a lot of families here in New Zealand who aren't with their wider family or with people even from their close family, so it can be quite a tough time of year," says the Red Cross' Hannah Butler.

The Partes will celebrate Christmas twice this week - with two church functions to attend. There'll be food and of course gifts, but they say they've already received the best present they could hope for.
