Five hundred kilograms of fireworks lit up the Sky Tower in Auckland at the stroke of midnight on Sunday, welcoming in 2017.

The crowd was well-behaved, with police only having to deal with "minor disorder incidents, liquor ban breaches and intoxication". In other words, "nothing unusual".

The organisers of the Sky Tower show told Newshub on Saturday it had been six months' work.

"A lot of people don't realise the time and effort that goes into this… but it's well worth it," said Robert McDermott of PyroStar International.

"The Sky Tower fireworks are SkyCity's gift to Auckland and we're proud to have been delivering the New Year's Eve fireworks display for close to two decades now," SkyCity acting general manager Matt Ballesty said.
