Video shows unrecognisable roads after Southland flooding

  • 23/01/2017

Video shows how severe weather over the weekend left the Southland town of Waikaia in a puddle of trouble.

Some roads in the area were unrecognisable by helicopter after roads were swallowed by the water.

Farmers in the area have had to deal with paddocks saturated in water, leaving some livestock stranded on islands in their own paddock.

The main road into Waikaia was closed, after the Waikaia River rose more than two metres above it's normal level.

Southland District Council are asking the public to be careful when driving around the area and be advised some roads may be closed.

Flood warnings have been put in place for more than nine different areas of northern Southland after rivers rose at least one metre about normal levels.

A Waikaia resident described the flooding as "it's the most I've seen it up [the river] in 10 years."

Flood warnings are still in place but water levels have begun to reside.
