2degrees mobile app back online after slow system update

2degrees customers have been battling to top-up thanks to an ongoing system "upgrade" - but the war is over, with the app now online.

The company declared the internal upgrade on Facebook on February 15, and days later sent a text out reassuring customers they wouldn't face any problems paying bills or topping up.

But the company's app loads a message saying "A connection failure occurred" nearly two weeks after the upgrade started.

The app is now back online, ending a 10-day lockout.

However, it isn't all smooth sailing just yet.

A customer, who wanted to remain anonymous, told Newshub that while the app might be up and running, a new login feature requiring an email rather than a phone number was making it impossible to get back in.

The email address, which the customer told Newshub he was the sole user of, claimed to be registered to another account, making it unavailable for his use.

The worst is said to be over, 2degrees' Director of Corporate Affairs and Wholesale, Mathew Bolland says the main upgrade had already been completed, and the app was the last thing to sort out.

The only complete outages of the top-up system were pre-planned, he says - on Tuesday and Thursday, when they moved to the new system, and Mr Bolland says customers were warned of this in advance.

Mr Bolland added that despite an internal systems fault, no operations such as texting or calling were made unavailable.

Despite that, disgruntled customers are giving 2degrees a piece of their mind on the network's Facebook page.

"This is beyond a joke now, I have no idea how much data I'm using and could be spending up a fortune without knowing if I need to buy more," wrote Matt Hale.

"It's pretty ridiculous that you thought you'd need more than a few hours to update your system, let alone the weeks it's been! You need to fire your little hamsters and roll back the "upgrade" till it's functional [sic]."

2degrees has suggested other ways to top up accounts.

The call centre is inundated, it says, and suggests the fastest way to get your phone going is through their website.

But many beg to differ.

2degrees user Annie Brown says she's looking to take her business elsewhere.

"I can't even top up online. I'm really over it and Spark is looking very good at the moment. I went into the shop and they couldn't even top my phone up there."

Mathew Bolland says the network is apologetic for the frustration the upgrade caused and knows this isn't the level of service their customers expect.
