Fire on motorway sparks major Auckland traffic delays

A vehicle fire has caused chaos on State Highway One going through central Auckland.

Southbound lanes on the Victoria Park Flyover were closed as firefighters battle the blaze, which started around 4pm.

The road was re-opened about 4:45pm, although emergency services remain on the scene.

Auckland Transport says a diversion is in place at Fanshawe Street but heavy delays are expected.

The fire is expected to slow down traffic heading to the Auckland Lantern Festival, which kicks off on Thursday night at the Auckland Domain at 7:30pm. Organisers are warning attendees to travel by bike instead.
