Video from inside court on Tuesday captures a murder-accused's tale of supernatural hitmen and demonic possession.
Waiuku man Michael Joseph Waipouri has been accused of murdering Lance Murphy.
He beat Murphy with a bat and a tree branch, and Murphy's body was later dumped in a remote area in Wellsford.
However Waipouri told court that he killed Mr Murphy because he saw a demon with 10 heads come out of his chest - evidence that Mr Murphy was a hitman who had killed his own wife and her mother.
He confronted Mr Murphy with a photo of them, and said he feared he was next.
"I grabbed the photo, and I stuck it on the table and I said look at it - may the truth set you free!" he exclaimed in court.
"And that's when these ten dragon heads come out of his chest and dropped to the ground - and they vibrated towards the door, and they started to climb because the door was locked and they started to climb up three high. And by then he had opened the door and gone out and out these things went."
Waipouri told the court he had broken the news to Mr Murphy's children - who were Waipouri's godchildren.
"I said listen kids - I had no choice - I killed him. He was evil."
Waipouri's lawyers say they will call a psychiatrist to give evidence.
