Shop owner calls for 'justice' after yet another attack

Another Auckland shop keeper has been attacked, ahead of a meeting of small business owners on Thursday night.

Shop owner Sukhwinder Singh was set upon without warning after three men entered the Otahuhu liquor shop at around 7:45pm, one gripping a steel pole.

Mr Singh said he received "probably 10 to 15 punches" before, cradling their loot, the trio made their getaway.

But while Mr Singh was on the phone to police, one offender returned to unleash another flurry of punches and take another bottle of spirits.

It's third aggravated robbery in just over a week and Mr Singh likened his attacker to an animal.

"He kept punching me, punching me... That's why I compare with animals, they got no manners, no brain," he told Newshub.

It's not the first time he's been attacked.

His brother had a glass bottle hurled at him, shattering his nose, last July, and then there was an attack at their other shop on New Year's Eve.

"They keep doing these things. We want justice here. We want New Zealand to be safe," Mr Singh said.

Police say that will require more than just police work - parents need to take responsibility too.

"It worries me more that the youth of today seem to think it's okay to commit any sort of crime," Inspector Dave Glossop told Newshub.

"Especially brazenly walking into dairies and committing crimes - what is happening in that person's life?"

Mr Singh blames weak laws too - he says young offenders don't care about the repercussions.
