Golden Lamb showcase displays best of the country's sheep

It's New Zealand's answer to the Grammys- the Glammys, also known as the Golden Lamb Awards, but while there's no red carpet, there's still red hot competition.

As part of the Wanaka A&P Show, a competition is run to see where the country's tastiest lamb comes from.

The 10th Golden Lamb Awards aims to showcase the quality of New Zealand's top sheep farmers.

"What it's all about is finding the best-tasting, most tender, most succulent lamb in the country," head judge Graham Hawkes says.

Our grass-fed systems make Kiwi lamb the premium choice for international consumers, but the industry here has undergone a major transformation over the last 25 years to improve its productivity.

"We've got roughly half the number of sheep that we had in 1990, but we produce that same amount of lamb for export ," Sam McIvor, Beef + Lamb CEO told Newshub.

It's a result of a focus on genetics and increasing reliance on smart farming techniques and technologies, all of which are on display at the 80th Wanaka A&P Show this weekend.

"On a quantity scale we could never compete with some countries around the world. So go for quality, go for smaller market share of a better quality," Wanaka A&P show Doug Stalker says.

Silver Fern Farms is launching premium pre-packaged cuts of meat into the likes of Germany and China, targeting buyers willing to pay more for quality and convenience.

Dean Hamilton, Silver Fern Farms chief executive thinks pushing the quality will work wonders.

"We're not going to be the cheapest producer of protein in the world with our grass-based systems. So for us it's all about getting more with what we sell," he says.

Farmers will be sizing up their options at this weekend's show, looking to get more bang for their buck - and hard work - down on the farm.
