Napier police admit dashboard marijuana 'not professional'

Napier police officers who left a marijuana plant on the dashboard of their car have apologised for their lapse in professionalism.

The plant, photographed outside a McDonald's restaurant by Facebook user Jayme Pakoti last week, was in full view of the public.

"Parked up next to this police car at Maccas this morning... Notice anything strange????" she wrote.

Newshub asked the police for an explanation, and was told it was a mistake.

"The officers involved have been spoken to and have apologised, acknowledging their actions have not been professional," said Inspector Tania Kura, Hawke's Bay area commander.

The police website advises against leaving valuables in a car, and if you have to, make sure they're out of sight of potential thieves.

Police did not explain why the officers were in possession of a marijuana plant in the first place.
