A 59-year-old man has been arrested in relation to the brutal attack on a woman who woke up in an Auckland quarry two weeks ago.

He's been charged with abduction, wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and assault with intent to commit sexual violation.

The woman woke to the brutal attack in Riverhead at 2:12am on February 26, badly injured and finding a man standing over her with a bat with some of her clothes gone.

She had no memory of the night before and no idea where she was.

The man was arrested at an Onehunga property just after midday on Sunday and is due to appear in Auckland District Court on Monday.

Detective Senior Sergeant Kim Libby said the victim was "extremely relieved" to hear the news.

"This has been a traumatic experience for her and she is receiving ongoing support from her family, friends and police," he said.

She suffered a broken thumb and injuries to her face and head, and was extremely traumatised by the event.

CCTV footage of a 2008 Ford Mondeo seen speeding out of the quarry at the same time was crucial to the investigation, and one was found and seized at the Onehunga property.

"The investigation team have worked tirelessly over the past 14 days and we know this news will bring a great deal of relief to the Auckland community," Snr Sgt Libby said.
