Dairy owners hit the streets over violent crime

Auckland dairy owners are calling for harsher penalties for thieves after a spate of robberies and attacks.

Shopkeepers and liquor store owners will be marching in Manukau on Sunday afternoon to show the Government they mean business.

Crime Prevention Group spokesman Sunny Kaushal says enough is enough.

"This is concerning everyone. Today we need to stand up. This is becoming an epidemic. I think something serious is waiting to happen, and we need to take action.

"We need to make sure that the lives of these dairy owners and shop owners are safe."

The march starts at 2pm outside the Manukau Shopping Centre on Great South Rd.

"We need to send a message to the Government saying that this is not on," says Mr Kaushal. "This crime needs to stop. The law and order situation is out of control."

He wants more police and harsher penalties.

The Government earlier this month announced where it would be putting its 880 new frontline officers across the country over the next four years. Auckland City and Waitemata will get 145 of those.
