Fleeing driver in police pursuit crashes, passenger killed

The driver who caused a fatal crash when he fled police in south Auckland on Thursday morning was a disqualified driver.

He crashed his car into a Mangere laundromat shopfront, killing his passenger - a 27-year-old man from Counties-Manukau. The driver, a 29-year-old man, is in hospital.

The incident happened at the intersection of Mangere and Walmsley Rd at around 3am on Thursday.

Police in an unmarked car saw the vehicle doing burn-outs. There was then a 40-second pursuit.

"Police lost sight of the vehicle prior to Greys Ave, Mangere East," police said in a statement.

"The vehicle was located shortly after and had collided with a building at the intersection of Mangere and Walmsley Roads."

The Serious Crash Unit is investigating and the matter will be reported to the Independent Police Conduct Authority.
