Motorists frustrated over Christchurch-Picton road delays

Motorists taking the alternate route between Christchurch and Picton have plenty reasons to stay alert this Easter.

The road's busy, potholed and there'll be extra police on it.

The road has become a replacement to State Highway 1 since the Kaikoura earthquake.

But the alternate route is worn down and struggling to cope under the weight of four times more traffic.

And the extra vehicles are travelling slow, backed up in long queues more than a dozen times, as road workers repair the broken tarseal.

As a result, motorists are frustrated with the delays - which is why police have upped patrols on the road over the long weekend, urging frustrated motorists to extra care.

However, with the coastal road still being repaired, drivers are going to be living with these frustrations for many months to come.
