A second abduction attempt in as many weeks has occurred outside an Upper Hutt primary school on Monday afternoon.

Trentham School released a statement on their Facebook page this afternoon saying a child was approached by a man in a black car at around 3:15pm.

"The man said 'I need to take you home'," the statement read.

"The child asked for the password which the man got wrong. The child ran off and didn't tell his mum as he didn't want her to worry. He has told us now as he's afraid to walk home this afternoon."

The school said they are working with police, and will have more staff out in the playground and around the school for the rest of the week.

"We don't want to alarm students so they are frightened to go home, but we will remind them about what they need to do to keep safe. Please have this conversation at home also."

Last week the principal of Upper Hutt School Jo Grant wrote a letter warning parents following the attempted luring of a girl out of school grounds on Tuesday afternoon.

"This man said 'your Mum and Dad told me to pick you up'," last week's statement read.
