Police have suspended the search for the man thought missing in Auckland Harbour, after reports he made his way safely out of the water on the North Shore.

Police were alerted at 5:30am that two men were in the water.

One was retrieved and taken to hospital. A search was launched for the other, but suspended soon afterwards.

The hospitalised man told police the pair didn't know each other, and only met the night before in a bar on Karangahape Rd. He said they discovered they both lived on the North Shore, so decided to walk home together.

They got to the Harbour Bridge and realised they couldn't walk across it, so decided to try and swim across.

The rescued man says he is pretty sure his new mate got home, but as he only knows his first name has no way of contacting him.

The missing man is only known as "Johnny".

Police say after "speaking with various witnesses and the man who was recovered from the water", the search has been suspended and will not resume unless any further information comes to light.
