Ammonia leak at Invercargill freezing works

Fire crews are working to disperse an ammonia gas leak at Invercargill's freezing works.

Eight vehicles including fire crews, support vehicles and water tankers were called to the scene at the Alliance Lorneville plant on Crowe Rd at 1pm.

The leak has now been contained.

A fire spokesman says he knows where the leak originated from but did not want to say at this stage.

The spokesman could not confirm whether anyone was evacuated from the building, but it's reported an ambulance was also in attendance.

It's the second ammonia leak at a freezing works within a week. Last Friday there was a major ammonia leak at the AFFCO meat processing plant in Moerewa.

Ammonia is a strong smelling colourless gas, often used for cleaning. It can be extremely dangerous if inhaled, irritating the skin, eyes, nose, throat and lungs.
