Police find car that destroyed a Canterbury sports field

Police have seized the vehicle they believe was responsible for tearing up a sportgrounds in the south Canterbury community of Pleasant Point.

The vehicle was found in Timaru this morning, thanks to a tipoff from the public.

Police are now working to identify the driver.

Residents in Pleasant Point are angry, with the cost of the damage estimated to be more than $20,000.

Giant divots and deep tread marks cover the length and breadth of Pleasant Point's Domain.

Police say at 3am on Monday a 4WD tore back and forth across the town's rugby, soccer and cricket grounds, leaving a trail of destruction.

As well as leaving deep gouges in the town's main ground and destroying a junior goal post - the vandals tore up the town's two new cricket pitches.

Club captain Cameron Lundie is bitterly disappointed given the club had only just finished fundraising $22,000 to install them.

"It's a lot of hard work ruined in twenty minutes of what someone thinks is a bit of fun," he says.

The extent of the damage means the town's 15 football teams will have to find an alternative ground to play at for the foreseeable future.

Police say aside from tyre marks and destruction the hoons left something else behind - a piece of evidence.

A green flare guard from a mid-1990's Nissan Terrano was found next to the broken goal post.

The grounds could be closed for weeks as police close in on the delinquents who did dozens of donuts.
