Supporters of a restored ChristChurch Cathedral will have to wait until September to learn what will be dome with the quake-damaged building.

The Anglican Church is leaving a final decision to a diocesan synod, and it won't be made until September.

Great Christchurch Buildings Trust co-chair Philip Burdon says it's frustrating to be kept waiting.

"It's disappointing yes, and unfortunate, that the church is going to address the issue in September."

But Mr Burdon says it's important the right decision is made.

"It's awfully important if the synod, which is apparently the body that's going to be used for this vote, is given a full and frank understanding of all the issues."

The synod will decide whether to accept an offer to help reinstate the cathedral or design an entirely new one.

The synod is the governing body of the Christchurch Diocese, made up of more than 225 members.

Bishop Victoria Mathews says people are still very divided over whether to reinstate the cathedral or commit to a contemporary cathedral.

"Members of synod will make a decision on whether to accept an offer to assist with reinstatement from the New Zealand Government or construct an inspirational contemporary cathedral to a design that is, as yet, undecided but the cost of which will be within the $42 million insurance fund."
