Dairies call on police to stub out robberies

Dairies across the country might start pulling tobacco and cigarettes from their shelves to prevent thefts.

The spate in robberies targeting cigarettes has already spurred one Otago store to do it out of fear.

Association of Dairy, Grocery and Small Businesses spokesperson Neil Patel says it's a last resort, with tobacco accounting for up to 50 percent of revenue in some stores.

"Very weak, our justice system; very weak, our law and order; very weak, our police force. And that's the reason - they don't get caught."

Mr Patel says the Government needs to step up and combat theft, and it shouldn't be the business owner's responsibility.

"Nobody in New Zealand should have to resort to their own protection. It should be provided by the state… sort it out."

Police say they are working hard every day to ensure that "everyone in our community can live, work and play in a safe environment".

"We want small business owners to know that we will do everything we can to prevent crime from happening, and make sure offenders are held accountable," says Superintendent Sue Schwalger.

Police met with small business owners and the Indian Association to discuss the situation on Saturday.

"Any opportunity for police to interact with their community is a positive thing and tonight's meeting means Police and local business owners will be able to work together more closely in future," says Supt Schwalger.

In the meantime, Mr Patel says it's not fair on business owners to lose money and be living in fear constantly.

"It's affecting their families… particularly families running a business where a husband, wife and children are running it, and they're trying to make ends meet."
