Poop emojis float in lake at Waikato protest

Clean water protesters are demanding that the Government listens to their calls for action.

Members of the group ActionStation are putting about 50 giant inflatable poop emojis on Lake Ohakuri north of Taupō on Saturday, to highlight problems with the proposed freshwater National policy statement.

Campaigner Rick Zwaan says as it stands, the new policy will actually make waterways more polluted.

Mr Zwaan says the floating protest action is taking place during the National Party's conference which is being held in Taupō.

While protesters are making a statement in a light-hearted way, the issue is anything but funny, he says.

The Government's National Policy Statement for Freshwater Management directs regional councils, in consultation with communities, to set objectives for the state of freshwater bodies in their regions and to set limits to meet these objectives, the Ministry for the Environment says.
