Rugby memorial match halted by another head injury

There's been an unfortunate end to a Wellington rugby game that was dedicated to the memory of a young player who died this week.

Daniel Baldwin, 19, suffered a serious injury requiring brain surgery in last weekend's match.

After spending days in an induced coma, he died on Wednesday.

His Wellington club team chose to play on.

On Saturday - one week since Daniel played what would be his final match - his teammates took to the field as part of a memorial day to remember him.

But in an unfortunate twist, it had to be called off midway through the second half due to another head injury.

A player was left convulsing on the ground, and was stretchered off and taken to hospital.

Wellington Rugby Union has already launched an investigation into the events leading up to last week's incident, but says it's primary focus is making sure players and support staff are being looked after.

Club chairman Jason Judd says after Daniel's tragic death everyone's doing their best to "pull together".

"Today's about honouring Daniel and remembering Daniel and for his mates to show their support for the friends and family of Daniel," he says.

Those in the community are being encouraged to seek help, if they need it.

After the final whistle of Saturday's match both teams came together to pay tribute.

A memorial will be held on Saturday night at the team's clubrooms.

It's a chance for the community to come together, to remember a much-loved mate.
