A blanket of thick fog has smothered Christchurch on Wednesday morning and at least 20 flights have been delayed or cancelled at Christchurch International Airport.

Authorities have warned drivers to take care on the road and to use their headlights.

MetService says coastal areas down the east coast of the South Island will be covered with fog.

They say the foggy morning is from sea fog, which means moisture over colder water causes the air just above the surface to cool and condense to create the smother of mist.

The blanket is expected to ease during the day but will return "in full force" covering the coast again in the evening.
