Truck rolls, throws logs over road in Bay of Plenty storm

A logging truck rolled on State Highway 2 near the Bay of Plenty town of Pikowai early on Friday morning, as wild weather lashed the region.

"Yes that was the Matata siren at 2:59am that woke some of you up," the Matata Volunteer Fire Brigade wrote on Facebook.

The volunteer firefighters found the road half-blocked by the truck and trailer on its side, and the load of logs strewn over the highway. The driver had minor injuries.

"In a howling gale and rain we stood fast at the scene until roading contractors came to take over part of the scene and the logging company brought in a truck to remove the logs.

"Once we'd turned back Edgecumbe we assisted the driver and once ambulance arrived we helped get him on board and two of our members helped drive the ambulance into Whakatane."

Further north in Thames two trucks rolled on Thursday night.
