Watercare scraps Oratia water treatment plant proposal

Watercare has decided to forego plans for a $300 million-plus water treatment plant in Oratia, announcing Manuka Road is now the new preferred site.

The decision means up to 30 Oratia homes which were under threat will be saved, a victory for the close-knit community who publicly opposed the proposed plant.

The 'Save Oratia' Facebook page posted on Tuesday afternoon the news was "a huge relief".

"Thanks to everyone who has played a part in defending our precious valley - it has been an incredible community effort! We will all sleep well tonight - for the first time in months," they wrote.

Auckland Council-controlled Watercare says it plans to try and offset the ecological impact it will have on the Titirangi site.
