A taxi driver was kidnapped and seriously assaulted, then let free in the earlier hours of Wednesday morning in Wellington.

At about 2:30am in the Ngauranga area, the driver was attacked in his parked car and placed in the boot.

Around two hours later he was freed and called police, and the taxi was found nearby. He was taken to Wellington hospital and has serious but non life-threatening injuries.

Police are reviewing camera footage from the taxi, and have images of a man who removed the camera from the taxi during the incident.

They are looking for the man who Detective Sergeant Richard Gibson says "likely holds the key to solving this vicious crime".

Anyone with information can contact Detective Sergeant Richard Gibson on 043812000.
