A Dunedin man has pleaded guilty to murdering a 54-year-old woman.

Sharon Comerford was murdered in her home in the small community of Seacliff, north of Dunedin, on March 7 last year.

Stephen Findlay, 61, who was originally set to stand trial in the Dunedin High Court on a charge of murder with a firearm, was found by authorities the next day at the nearby Truby King Reserve with critical gunshot injuries to his head.

He's now pleaded guilty to an amended charge of murder, which was accepted by both the Crown and Defence counsel.

Findlay will be sentenced next Tuesday.
