Eight dead stingrays wash up on St Heliers beach

Eight more dead stingrays have washed up on an Auckland shoreline, just days after more than a dozen were found dead on the beach.

The eagle rays washed up at St Heliers beach, the same spot where another 15 stingrays were found dead on Saturday morning.

Witnesses said both sets of the rays appeared uninjured, aside from damage from seagulls after they washed up.

On Saturday, Department of Conservation shark expert Clinton Duffy told NZME it is "very common" for stingrays to get caught in shark nets.

"They've probably been caught in a net and discarded," he said of the animals found over the weekend.

The official cause of death is not yet known.
