Drunk league fan charged after botched pitch invasion

Two Rugby League World Cup fans are being charged with pitch invasion.

One has suffered a suspected broken ankle, after failing to jump a barrier at the Kiwis vs Fiji game in Wellington on Saturday night.

Cup operations commander Inspector Neil Banks says the man was intoxicated when he fell, quite seriously.

A second person, stemming from a separate incident, is also being charged.

Pitch invasion carries a maximum penalty of three months' jail, or a $5000 fine.

The misbehaviour at the Kiwis vs Fiji game is in contrast to the "awesome" crowd at the Tonga vs Lebanon match in Christchurch, police say, where no one was arrested.

"The crowd was really well-behaved with no issues with alcohol," said Supt Lane Todd.

"We had no issues whatsoever. The crowd was awesome."
