Extra security promised before Tonga vs Samoa league match

The Hamilton City Council is promising extra security ahead of the Samoa vs Tonga match at the Rugby League World Cup in Hamilton on Saturday.

The game promises to be a thrilling physical contest on the field, but already tensions have run over, leading to violent brawls in south Auckland.

On Thursday, an estimated 150-200 people gathered at the MIT carpark, carrying poles, sticks and even a machete.

Six people were arrested for disorderly behaviour and possession of offensive weapons.

Hamilton City Council operations director Chad Hooker promises that precautions are being taken to deal with any violent offenders.

"We assess our security requirements based on every event and given that this is a large world event, we're taking it seriously," he says. "The priority is definitely for the safety and security of our patrons, coming along to attend the game.

"We have assessed that and made sure we've got some extra security available for the game tomorrow night."

Police will also be stepping up to ensure the public is safe outside the stadium, Mr Hooker says.

"The police obviously are working with us, as they always do. They have indicated they will have a larger security presence around the venue for the game."

He urges people to "show respect" to other fans and have a great time.

"We haven't had any significant issues in Hamilton. Our Tongan and Samoan communities are really excited about this game, and they've been really enthusiastic."

"We don't see there will be any significant issues around the game."
