A goat's bleating sparked a search and rescue mission after trampers mistook it for a person calling for help.

The group were in the Egmont National Park in Taranaki on Tuesday morning when they heard what they thought were calls for help.

A member of the group called 111 and the Taranaki Rescue Helicopter was sent to the Kaiauai Shelter area with a paramedic on board.

The helicopter searched the area and no injured person was located.

However some of the trampers found a black goat and the noises are believed to be its bleating.

Taranaki Search and Rescue response manager Senior Sergeant Thomas McIntyre says although this appears to have been a case of mistaken identity the person who called 111 did the right thing.

"A bleating goat does sound very human so you are better off calling 111 than not. We would rather over react to a report that someone may be missing and injured as opposed to getting it wrong.

"The person did exactly the right thing, and anyone else who finds themselves in the same situation should call 111."

The Department of Conversation has been informed about the goat.
