Mayor's emotional plea after three suicides in one week

  • 16/11/2017

Whangarei's Mayor has made an emotional plea to her community to seek help if they are contemplating suicide.

Sheryl Mai said she's "incredibly sad" following the death of a local 15-year-old girl through suicide.

"It's just made me incredibly sad to think that she decided that there was no hope for her future," Ms Mai said.

She urged those who need help to find it in the community, and to talk to someone about it.

"Please, if you're considering suicide talk to someone, make the most of your friendships, please don't become another one who's lost hope. If there's anything that we can do to help please, please let us know."

Northland DHB had been notified of three suspected suicides in the region in the past week, according to RNZ.

One was the girl Ms Mai referred to, another was a 13-year-old boy and one a 22-year-old man.

New Zealand has the highest suicide rates in the OECD for youth aged 17-24
