Singing Samoan league fans take over the streets

Singing Samoan league fans caused a scene on the streets of south Auckland on Friday night, lighting fireworks and blocking traffic.

Video shows police struggling to keep the crowd under control on East Tamaki Road in Otara, spilling out onto the road as officers tried to hold them back.

Police say there were between 300-400 people gathered, and three were arrested for disorder.

Meanwhile in Mangere, next to the McDonald's restaurant, 250 people gathered and three people were arrested for disorder.

It comes ahead of Saturday night's Rugby League World Cup match between Tonga and Samoa, and after a week of escalating violence between the two countries.

On Thursday night there were six arrests in Otara when a 200-strong crowd brawled in a carpark with poles, sticks and even a machete.

Police describe Friday night's crowd as "generally well-behaved".

"There was a small number that got a bit carried away," inspector Jared Pirret told Newshub.

"We've just taken a couple of their poles for the flags, they get waved around and they knock people and they can be quite intimidating."

Mr Pirret says a special police operation as called in to keep a close eye on the fans.

However it's brought more concern ahead of tonight's game, with Hamilton Mayor Andrew King calling for peace.

"We don't want that sort of behaviour in Hamilton," Mr King says. "We welcome good-natured support for these two teams... that rivalry needs to stay on the field."

Earlier this week a photo was posted to Facebook showing a young man burning a Samoan flag. This was followed by mobs of rugby league fans fighting in the street in Otahuhu.

The following day video emerged of an ugly street punch-up in south Auckland, showing a gang of yelling and screaming Samoan supporters surrounding a vehicle, while someone was attacked. The sound of breaking glass could be heard, while others attempted to defuse the situation.
