Australian immigration minister admits wrongful deportation of Kiwi

Australia's Immigration Minister has admitted the Kiwi father of an AFL star may have been wrongly deported from Australia, denying him the chance to watch his son win the AFL premiership.

Shane Martin had his Australian visa cancelled in March because he was said to have links with the Rebels motorcycle gang.

On Tuesday, lawyers for Australia's immigration minister indicated they would drop the case against him. Now Mr Martin is hoping to be back with his son Dustin and the rest of his family across the Tasman in time for Christmas.

"It is good news but I'm still not there with my family," Mr Martin says. "When I'm there, sitting there I'll be a lot happier."

His lawyer is now going back to court to ensure the Immigration Minister can't change his mind.
