Auckland and Christchurch may have seen their warmest Christmas Days in 15 years today as sun lit up the country, but that's not the case for Boxing Day.
Instead tomorrow will be more of a shopping day than a beach day, with showers due to hit both the North and South Islands.
A brief period of heavy rain is anticipated for the top of the South Island tonight, clearing for a bit before the showers return.
The rain will be gladly appreciated for Canterbury, which is suffering in the recent dry weather and has seen several scrub fires break out in the last week.
A southerly wind will bring some more showers to most of the North Island, with potential for thunderstorms for nearly everyone late in the afternoon.
The rain will clear up fairly quickly, with clouds around on Wednesday but plenty of sunshine for the rest of the week.
