Christchurch rain breaks 47-day drought

The long, hot dry spell in Christchurch has finally come to an end.

A light shower of rain fell in the city at 10am, breaking the 47-day-long drought. It also broke the city's previous record held since 1954.

Some 3.6 millimetres were recorded at Christchurch Airport, enough for forecasters to declare the dry spell over.

The lack of rain was putting pressure on the water supply. Christchurch City Council is on high alert, according to spokesman Tim Drennan.

"We used half a billion litres of water on Saturday and Sunday," he says.

"However, we were able to maintain pressure and keep all our reservoirs full."

Mid-morning on Monday, residents were relieved to hear the council wouldn't be imposing water restrictions.

Mr Drennan says that doesn't mean locals don't have to be mindful of waste.

"Just because we didn't put restrictions in place doesn't mean to say that people need to not conserve water.

"It's really crucial they continue to do so, just to make sure we have a fair supply for everyone."
